SPY’S WINDHAM AND CANARD SWEEP DAYTONA SUPERCROSS
Spy Optic supercross racers Kevin Windham and Trey Canard were crowned Daytona Supercross champions at the tenth round of the Monster AMA Supercross Series—not only overcoming their competitive fields but quite possibly the muddiest conditions ever experienced in the history of supercross.
Their wins gave Spy a 1-1 sweep of the premier AMA Supercross class and support AMA Supercross Lites class.
Windham took advantage of leader Chad Reed’s stalled bike with just a couple turns left to go in the race to take the win – his second of the 2008 supercross season.
Windham and the rest of the field were a muddy mess only seconds into the rain-shortened twelve lap (from 20) main event. Windham got out in second place on the start and from there it became a session of survival to record his first win ever at the legendary Daytona track.
Prior to the Supercross class main event, Spy Optic’s Trey Canard won his heat race, carrying the momentum of two-straight Lites class main event wins into Friday’s Lites final at Daytona. Canard’s No. 48 Honda CRF450R got the lead early, and he held on through the checkers over hard-charging defending supercross Lites champion Ryan Villopoto.
Canard was one of the only riders able to keep his goggles on through the insane conditions. “I finally had to ditch them with only a couple corners to go when I got completely roosted by a lapper. The conditions were as brutal as it gets and the Alloy roll-offs worked perfectly.”
As of that weekend, Windham sat within 23 points of series leader Reed, while Spy teammate Andrew Short was third in the standings with 154 points. In the Supercross Lites division Canard enjoyed a wide lead over the rest of the field, 75-51.
THE TROOPER: BRAD MARTIN AFTER HIS FALL AT X GAMES 12 COMES OUT ON TOP AT WORLD CUP
Spy’s 21-year-old Brad Martin took a horrendous slam at X-Games 12 in Aspen during his Super Pipe qualifying run that sent chills throughout the crowd. The Canadian took a nasty 12-foot fall from the sky to the deck that left him with a bloody mouth, a bruised kidney and later that day, urinating blood.
After a nasty fall like that no one would expect Martin to climb back up the pipe and take another run. But, bloody and battered, he attempted his second run. Brad was unable to qualify for the finals, but received huge props from the crowd for his valiant efforts.
Three weeks later at the NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup, Brad worked out the kinks from his fall and impressed the judges with a backside air followed by a frontside 10 tail grab, a Cab 7, a frontside 9 tail grab and finished with a frontside 5 mute grab. His 42.9 points beat Jeff Batchelor's 40.8.
Brad was all smiles as he was handed the oversized check for $10,000 and awarded this year’s gold as the World Cup champ. “This was the first contest I ever got to do a victory lap for. That’s a wicked feeling, knowing you have already won, but then you have to figure out if you’re going to do an actual run or a slash...I did a slash," said Martin.
With his first major win under his belt, Brad is looking forward to the US Open where he will be competing alongside fellow Spy teammates Louie Vito and Iouri Podladtchikov from March 19th to 23rd in Stratton, Vermont.
MIKE CLARKE ON FIRE AT US OPEN IN THE BIG AIR COMP
On a bitterly cold Saturday evening in January at Copper Mountain, Colorado, 5,000 spectators braved the windchill to witness the most anticipated and highly-lauded event of the US Open of FreeSkiing…the Big Air comp.
While this year's jump dynamics didn't allow for the amplitude and progressive trickery that the crowd may have expected, the invite only list of 30 competitors still threw down. Competitors each took two jumps, with the eight best-scoring jumps moving those athletes on to a single-elimination final. Those that made it through the next round squared off in a “best of two” format. When all was said and done, 18-year old Spy young gun, Mike Clarke made his way onto the podium with a third place finish, after stomping a number of perfect cab 1080 true tails. "I couldn't be more stoked," said an elated Clarke. "It’s so unexpected, and awesome to be on the podium in an event like this!"
Mike Clarke will be holding it down in film and photo shoots throughout North America and Europe this spring, and notably was just invited to participate in the Jon Olsson Super Sessions event, being recognized as one of the top 10 park skiers in the world. Stay tuned...
THE ASP/WCT UPDATE
It's that time again for the "Dream Tour" to begin. The Quiksilver Pro is the first of ten contests at Coolagatta "the Gold Coast" of Australia at Snapper Rocks surf break. This year Spy has two players in the WCT, Dean Morrison from Coolagatta and Ben Bourgeois from North Carolina. Dean is a seasoned WCT vet with a current fifth place rating. Ben has returned back to the WCT for 2008 after a four year absence.
This year’s tour hype is focused around two rookies--Jordy Smith and Dane Reynolds. They respectively finished first and second in the 2007 WQS and have established themselves as the next era of competitive surfers, surfing heats equal to any free surf session. It took Spy's seasoned WCT surfer Dean Morrison to show the media it's not going to be a walk in the park for these two new comers.
In round three, Dean drew Dane Reynolds and blew past him with a score of 16.10 to 13.27. Round four Dean drew Jordy Smith. After some more incredible surfing Dean beat Jordy with a score of 15.60 to 14.34. It was in the quarter finals where Dean drew his good friend and World Champion Mick Fanning. In the first half of the heat Dean was in control but it was in the end half of the heat Mick overtook Dean and won with a score of 14.34 to 13.06. Dean Morrison finished the event with an equal fifth.
Ben finished the 2007 WQS season ninth in the ratings and is no stranger to surfing the WCT. Immediately pitted against the best rated surfers on the tour, Ben drew CJ Hobgood and Adriano De Souza for his first heat on the circuit. Placing second in the heat, he next drew and beat the Brazilian Rodrigo Dornelles. In the third round, Ben lost to former three-time World Champion Andy Irons. Ben finished Snapper with a seventeenth place. Not a bad start for his first WCT contest in a few years.
Congrats to Dean and Ben! More WCT and ASP updates to follow.BULLS AND BIKINIS
The third annual Boardshorts, Bulls and Bikinis pro wakeboard event took place at the legendary Gilley's honky-tonk in Dallas, Texas and Spy’s Shane "Danger" Bonifay came out on top…twice!
The finals started at around 10:30pm and everyone was attacking the rails. Each rider got two attempts to show the judges why they deserved the win. Chad Sharpe's consistent riding landed him in third place overall. The "Bone-Crusher" Rusty Malinoski muscled through a 540 for second place, while Shane Bonifay nose-pressed his way to a victory like only he can! Shane pocketed $1,000 cash and the first of two customsilver belt buckles up for grabs for his efforts.
After the rail jam, the top wake and skate finalists headed over to the bull-riding arena. With a second custom silver belt buckle on the line, Clint Tompkins, Bret Little, Brian Grubb, Shane Bonifay, Rusty Malinoski and 2006 bull-riding champ, Chad Sharpe, each had a shot at taming the mechanical beast. The bull "operator" was showing no mercy, but almost everyone beat the eight-second standard. However, it was Bonifay who held on for 19.6 seconds to win the contest and snag his second silver buckle of the evening!
Stay tuned for more action from the Texas Wakeboard Tour...The next event is April 12th in Lubbock, Texas with the Riptank Rail Jam at the Garden. Top pro and regional Spy athletes will be on hand and ready to dominate.
LOUIE VITO WINS AGAIN AT THE US SNOWBOARDING GRAND PRIX IN KILLINGTON
Spy’s nineteen-year-old Louie Vito had his work cut out for him at the final stop of the Chevy Grand Prix series in Killington, Vermont. Louie qualified second going into the finals with a few key competitors to beat for the overall title and a brand new truck.
His first run, which consisted of back to back 10's, back to back 9's and a crippler, put him in first. With one run remaining it was a waiting game. Janne Corpi, the number one qualifier and last rider was unable to beat Louie’s flawless performance. Louie was crowned the 2008 Chevy U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix champion and drove home to Sandy, Utah in a brand new Chevy truck.
You can’t stop this freight train of talent…Louie is just coming off of two wins at the second stop of the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix in Tamarack and the 48Straight Jeep King of the Mountain event along with a second at the Vans Cup Tahoe. He now just sits outside the TTR top 15 at World No. 16. Not bad for this Columbus, Ohio native with a stellar halfpipe career ahead of him.

MOTO BUZZ...
The recurring theme from this year’s Monster Energy Supercross is that NO OTHER GOGGLE COMPANY HAS PLACED AS MANY RACERS IN THE TOP TEN AS SPY OPTIC! Led by Kevin Windham, Andrew Short and Nick Wey – along withGrant Langston when he wasn’t injured – Spy has controlled as much as 40% of the top ten overall Supercross class standings. This means the coveted ‘color count’ (as it’s known in the industry) in the goggle department has been dominated by Spy Optic—the best out of any goggle manufacturer... In the AMA SX Lites class, Spy Optic’s Trey Canard has won the first three rounds of the Eastern Region Supercross series (Atlanta, Indianapolis and Daytona). What makes that even more impressive is that those are Canard’s first three pro supercross races! Spy Optic’s snocross/dirt bike racer extraordinaire, Tucker Hibbert, dominated the snocross event at Winter X, bringing home his second straight gold medal in the last two years and just won the Snowmobile Pro Super Stock Championship in Thief River Falls, Minnesota... finally, Spy Optic co-founderJeremy “Showtime” McGrath has been hitting up some of the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series rounds and showing off for his still massive fan base during the introduction ceremonies.
