CONTRIBUTOR x SMILE ON YOUR BROTHER x LIVESTOCK

The idea behind Contributor is pretty simple: skateboards for all. Although this seems like a very generous statement, it’s something that we truly believe is possible and within all of our reach.

Today, there are approximately 1.6 million kids living in poverty across Canada. The negative effects of poverty are very significant and limiting for those who are affected by it on a daily basis, but are especially difficult for youth. For these youth things that we take for granted – let’s say, the simple action of going out to play with friends on a skateboard – seem unattainable. Without access to a positive support through a group of peers and healthy alternatives to focus on, these kids can lose their way.

By working with non-profit organizations across Canada, who are dedicated to youth at risk and children in lower-income neighborhoods, we hope to encourage successful outcomes through the addition of skateboarding as a positive reinforcement.

There is so much to be said about how skateboarding can improve lives and build friendships between people who would’ve otherwise been strangers; heck that’s why this organization exists!

Contributor allows all of us to come together and give a new generation of kids that same opportunity.

About the show

Conceived by Mike Giles and Annie Lam and co-curated by Bob Kronbauer of www.clubmumble.com fame, "Smile On Your Brother" , is an art show centered around the original shape of skateboards when they first hit mass production. This seemed the perfect canvas to launch the contributor campaign.
The idea behind not only the show, but also overall project is to hopefully inspire people to think about their first skateboard and what it meant to them. For many skaters, this still represents a pivotal moment in their lives, with every last little detail, fresh in their minds. Bringing together contemporary artists both in, and affected by the skateboard industry to help raise funds to go towards the first goal of Contributor which is to donate 100 skateboards to disadvantaged youth across Canada in 2009/2010

FREE LIFE CENTER

Artists and good friends, Seth Neefus and Mark Warren Jacques are creating a mobile installation where art can be viewed within a context that highlights and shares their ideals and lifestyle. With this mobile art center, they will showcase their collaborative and individual artworks, video and musical performances, as well as offer insight into this process through an exhibition catalogue. Seth and Mark hope to present a culmination of their artistic output and craftsmanship. Ultimately, visitors to the Free Life Center will be encouraged to find creativity, optimism, and freedom in their own lives.

Free Life Center will be a large scale hand-crafted, one-room structure, viewed as an art installation from the outside as well as an experience for the viewer on the inside. Built primarily from reclaimed materials, the building will emanate the artists' homespun aesthetic and their commitment to a high level of craftsmanship. Within the structure, viewers will be encouraged to explore every nook and cranny; finding that each element of the building has been considered and is resonating with the 'energy' of the free life. As a modular structure, the Center can be modified in size and scope to be shown in traditional gallery spaces, as well as be installed in natural environments beyond the typical viewing context.

Inspired by growth through adventure, Seth and Mark will go on tour with Free Life Center. At each location along the tour, the artists will be curating guest performances, workshops, jam sessions, drawing parties, dinner parties, and all around good times.

In addition to installing and touring with Free Life Center, the artists will produce a catalogue documenting this process and the artworks exhibited. This artists' book of the journeys and making of Free Life Center will be available during the tour and after. Seth and Mark intend to tour with the Free Life Center beginning in the spring of 2010.

How To Support Free Life Center

We feel that one of the main objectives of this project is to encourage and promote community and connectedness. In our everyday lives we sustain and rely on an amazing community of friends and family. Through community we stay motivated, enabled and inspired to keep creating and sharing. With that in mind we ask you to consider supporting the project.

Currently we are focused on raising funds for catalog printing and initial building costs, utilizing kickstarter.com. Kickstarter is a new "community-funding" platform that allows us to give you rad stuff for your support, which in turn enables us to do this project. Here's the way it works: We set a monetary goal of $2500 to raise over the course of 45 days. If you'd like to support the project, you check out our pledge incentives (aka rad stuff), decide what youd like, and make a pledge. Once we meet our monetary goal within the time frame, pledges automatically transfer to us and your pledge incentives get mailed off to you.

Check it out here www.kickstarter.com
