THE HURLEY TIMES
Wednesday, October 21, 2009The water is warm, the winds are light, swells are out of the south and northwest and the parking lot is alarmingly empty at lunch. Sounds like a good time to sneak a pack of M&M's from Creative and fill you in on all the latest at the Hurley Times.
THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
1. BRETT GIVES BACK
With Brett Simpson on the verge of qualification, his former HBHS surf team coach Andy Verdone thought it a good time to have him re-visit his alma mater and pass on some words of wisdom to the kids. Check Simpo's locker room speech right here: http://www.hurley.com/index.cfm/aid/36677/A-GOOD-LESSON2. DILLON PERILLO 90210
Speaking of high school dramas, how cool was that last night when Dixon dissed his way older girlfriend Sasha? Not as cool as the West Beverly High Surf Team scenes on the "new" 90210, where Hurley's own Dillon Perillo has been stunt doubling for the rebel-character Liam. "It was fun," said Dillon. "They paid us to surf Bolsa Chica for two days. All the actors had on, like, full front-zip wetsuits and Aqua Socks. Classic." Stay tuned for next episode, when Liam pulls a rodeo flip and - of course - gets the girl.3. MADE AT HURLEY HQ
Teal and crew have been pushing the "record" button a lot lately in the Hurley Studio. For proof, check these two new releases from Saosin and The Summer Set, made entire here at Hurley HQ. Lots more to come online from Set Your Goals, Tumbledown, The AKAs and more.4. VICTORY FOR VICTORINO
Some of you are probably wondering why the Dodgers are taking such a beating from the Philadelphia Phillies. Blame Pat O'Connell. Our sports marketing guru recently hooked up All-Star shortstop Shane Victorino with some Hurley gear, and then the Maui native went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer during their 11-0 drubbing of the Boys in Blue. Thanks a lot, Pat.5. THE PRINCE
It's not just our team riders who are making the news, it's us 9 to 5ers with a hurley.com email. Of course, Ryan Hurley isn't like the rest of us. He enjoys below sea-level reef passes and 15-foot, spine-twisting sling-shots at the Wedge. But The OC Weekly recently did a full-page story on him for his design capabilities, not his surfing. "If we can do a few truly innovative things each year, then we matter," says Ryan. Keep that in mind when you punch the clock tomorrow.6. FULL LEATHER JACKET
You know you've made the big time when you're in the "Hot Trend" pages of People Magazine. Our "Bowery Leather" piece is going to be really stuck up now. Don't take it personally if it ignores you.7. "A" GREAT BENEFIT
Bob and team put on a fantastic Surf Aid benefit at the "A" Restaurant in Newport last Wednesday. Rob Machado surfs better than he pours, but the end result was $5,000 going to earthquake relief in Sumatra. Every penny counts.8. VOTE FOR JAMIE
Former East Coast Hurley rep Jamie Tworkowski has been on a mission the last three years and all his hard work is finally being recognized. His organization, To Write Love on Her Arms, is an outreach group designed to help young people cope with depression, addiction and self-abuse issues. It's gotten a lot of notice in the music circles, and Jamie's recently been nominated for an MTV Woodie Award. Be sure to vote for him here: http://www.mtv.com/ontv/woodieawards/2009/good-woodie/9. LIVING THE DREAM
Our resident stoke-inducer Scottie Somers has also been spreading the love, most recently at Disneyland where he marched 70 strong and raised more than $4K for LTD. Thanks for all the inspiration, Scottie.COMING UP:
1. DRIFTER MANIA
For the next six weeks, you'll be hearing a lot about The Drifter. That's because we're in love with the movie and want the world to see it. The tour is locked in and you can go to www.thedriftermovie.com for all the details, but the newest development is that we'll be live streaming the premiere at the Montalban in Los Angeles on November 5. If you can't make it, log on to www.hurley.com/live and watch all the festivities - including the movie itself. The Internet's cool like that.2. HAPPY HOUR
Next Wednesday, October 28, at 5 p.m. will be our first episode of "Happy Hour," a live show celebrating whatever is on our Host, Kasyln Christy's mind at the moment. Kaslyn was a standout at a former Walk the Walk event, and she's now branching off into the webisode world. Expect her to make television obsolete by 2011.That's all the space we've budgeted for this issue of The Hurley Times. As Ryan Hurley might say, "Get out there and innovate."
