Taj Burrow Claims 2009 Pipe Masters Title

PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Tuesday, December 15, 2009) – Taj Burrow (AUS), 31, has claimed the 2009 Pipe Masters, defeating fellow Finalist Kelly Slater (USA), 37, in clean three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at the Banzai Pipeline.

The final event of the 2009 ASP World Tour season, the Pipe Masters culminated the Vans Triple Crown (an ASP Specialty Series), and provided non-stop, high-calibre action from the outset.

Burrow wasted little time in putting Slater on the ropes in the 35-minute Final, racking up a 7.00 out of a possible 10 on his opening ride for an electric fin waft followed by some solid forehand manoeuvres. With deteriorating conditions, Burrow stayed busy before collecting a 5.83 for an incredible full-rotation alley-oop, putting the pressure on Slater as time ran out.

“There were perfect backdoor waves this whole event and then for the Final it went onshore,” Burrow said. “It was strictly turns. It was all about turns and hopefully doing a few airs and I dropped down to my shortboard and my plan was to just to let loose. It was tough because I knew Kelly (Slater) could do anything. Even when there was 20 seconds to go and I had priority, I was still scared. I just had nothing to lose and tried to let loose.”

Today’s victory mark’s Burrow’s first ASP World Tour win since 2007 and his first-ever win at the infamous Banzai Pipeline.

“This win feels about as good as you could imagine,” Burrow said. “For me, winning this contest is the next best thing to winning a World Title. This is the one and only event that everyone would probably pick to win and I can’t believe I’m standing here right now. It’s an amazing feeling. There are so many tough guys that you go up against in this event that I thought it was out of my reach. This is the best victory of my career.”

Burrow, who has long been considered a legitimate ASP World Title contender, is thrilled with his finish to the 2009 season looks forward to 2010 with renewed vigour and hunger to hunt down the ever-elusive ASP crown.

“This win is an excellent springboard into next season,” Burrow said. “There is nothing but confidence to take from this and I’m excited for the Gold Coast. It comes around really fast. It feels like we’re on holiday now, but the Gold Coast sneaks up on us pretty quick and I’m excited for it. Hopefully I can win some more events, but this is the number one that I’ve ever dreamed of winning.”

Slater looked near unbeatable throughout the Billabong Pipe Masters, deftly manoeuvring his 5’11” craft through one incredible tube after another before running into Burrow in the Finals. While his opponent stayed busy throughout the bout, Slater waited patiently for scoring opportunities that never manifested.

“Unfortunately the Final had the absolute worst conditions of the contest, but there are still fun waves out there,” Slater said. “You could go out for a free surf and have a good time. It’s difficult to transition when you’re already expecting one thing. I had already had a couple of heats with barrels and then all of a sudden it’s completely different conditions. Still, there’s a shallow reef there, so you’re expecting one to throw out and barrel, but it just didn’t happen.”

The former nine-time ASP World Champion was in the hunt for an unprecedented seventh Pipe Masters title, but the conditions didn’t cooperate for the Floridian, despite finding the only barrel of the Final, scoring a 3.93 out of a possible 10.

“I thought the wave would be more than a three,” Slater said. “I still needed two waves, basically. There really weren’t any nine-point rides out there and had that been only a six I would have needed a seven. I thought the judges put me in a weird situation there, and in the end, nothing else came. Well, that’s not entirely true. I caught that last wave and did an off-the-top and Taj (Burrow) took off on it and just kicked off the side. He almost stood up too late and could have got an interference. Had he done that he would have only been judged on one wave. Had I landed that air reverse I could have gotten a score, but it was a long shot.”

MICKTORIOUS: He’s Done It Again
(Carlsbad, CA) – December 14th 2009 – The Billabong Pipe Masters is still on, but the world’s greatest surfer has already been determined as Mick Fanning claims his second ASP World Title. Fanning’s campaign for the crown kicked into high gear late in the season after his electrifying victory at the Hurley Pro at Trestles. The surfing world watched anxiously as best mates Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning battled out every point for the remainder of the season. It all came down to the Billabong Pipeline Pro, and a 3rd round exit from ‘Parko’ that sealed Fanning’s fate, crowning him as the 2009 ASP World Champion.

The excitement has been building for Hawaii ever since Fanning’s victory at Trestles put him into striking distance of Joel Parkinson. A second win at the Quiksilver France, backed by another win during the Ripcurl Search Portugal propelled Mick into first place, with Parko nipping at his heels.
“I knew I was surfing well,” Mick said. “I knew it was going to turn around sooner or later. I don’t know, it’s weird the way the world works.”
Not since 2003 has the ASP World Title come down to Hawaii. With solid 6-8 foot barrels, Pipeline produced optimal conditions and lots of drama for the grand finale. Coming off a win at the O’Neill Sunset Pro, Parko was poised and confident for the final event. But it would all came down to Round 3. With seconds winding off the clock, Parko needed a 6.54 to beat wildcard Gavin Gillette. His wave came, but instead of an epic glide through a beautiful Pipe barrel, it ejected Parko resulting in a nasty wipeout. Seconds later, the heat, and Parko’s world title campaign came to a close. Fanning was paddling out for his next heat as Parko was heading in and realized the consequence of his loss. The lifelong mates embraced and congratulated one another on an incredible season.
“I’m just a bit overwhelmed right now and I don’t quite know what to say,” Fanning said. “It was hard out there. I was trying to get ready for my heat and then Gavin (Gillette) got that one score as I was paddling out and, I don’t know, I just sort of slowed down.”

Fanning headed into the fourth round of the Pipe Masters as the new world champ, but would succumb to Dean Morrison. Fanning exited the water all smiles, and on the shoulders of Parko and Dingo. He greeted the fans and media at the waters edge as the ASP World Champion for the second time in his career.

Charles Spearin - Exclaim's Best Records of 2009

RVCA advocate and founding Broken Social Scene member, Charles Spearin was recently awarded the honor of Best Records of 2009 by Exclaim!*'# Magazine for his release, The Happiness Project. The record is a collection of sounds in tandem with interviews with Charles's downtown Toronto neighbours who all speak on their ideas and thoughts on happiness. It is a truly touching and endearing record and as one review quite accurately put it... "It doesn't always take much to lose faith in humanity and its capacity for compassion and understanding. Likewise, it doesn't take much to renew that same faith.". Charles can also be seen sporting a handsome RVCA Spanky button up in the press photo for the Exclaim!*'# write up. Hello, friends, and welcome to another black-tie digital party courtesy of The Hurley Times. Receiving this email means you are on our guest list and received the nod from our Secret Service. THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES

1. JOEL'S RUN After a dream win by day and a party all night in his contest jersey, Hawaiian ambassador Joel Centeio kept the celebration going by winning his first two heats at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset -- making it nine consecutive heat wins for him at the Triple Crown. Unfortunately, that run came to an end yesterday when he just missed out in the Round of 64 in dying surf off the Point. Still, Joel's been a shining beacon of aloha and Hurley pride this winter. And he'll likely have another shot at it at Pipeline.

2. IRVINE SPECTRUM STORE: UP AND RUNNING Under heart-palpitating deadlines and a major team effort, the new Hurley/Nike/Converse store at Irvine Spectrum is up and running just in time for the holidays. It already got the attention of scrutinizing industry blogger shop-eat-surf.com, describing it as "lofty" and "arty" with "rustic wood floors, metal shelving and large, colorful art." Doesn't sound like a typical mall store to us. And after asking The Hurley Times 8-ball if this store will prosper and procreate, it told us the following: "Our sources say, 'Yes.'"

3. HOW DO YOU WEAR YOUR PHANTOMS? Also unveiled to the public this past weekend are the new Phantoms with Nike Flywire. High-tech. Limited edition. For trunk geeks only. But the Hurley Times did manage to score a pair. After putting them through the test the past two weeks in Hawaii, take it from us: they're worth the price of admission. In conjunction with the Flywire launch, we're asking everyone who currently owns a pair of previous-generation Phantoms to get involved. We know they're the perfect short for practically anything: Pilates, cage-fighting, sit-ins and aggressive inline skating and we want to see the most creative example of Phantom-wearing out there. 4. SANTA'S LITTLE HELPERS We know Santa has deer-like creatures helping him out, but who knew he had a busted-up shark, crooked snake and drunk elephant? Apparently, Jason Maloney. The imperfect-animal visionary recently dressed up Jack's Corona Del Mar store with Santa's unsung assistants so they finally get the recognition they deserve. Stay tuned for an ABC Christmas Special starring the Heat Miser and Tippsy the Elephant.

5. HURLEY HONG KONG SURF CUP When most people think of Hong Kong, they think of "Made In." But believe it or not, this administrative region of China also has a small but thriving surf community. Hurley South Asia recognizes this, and recently sponsored its biggest surf event. Our "So Good, Yeah" Ambassador, Rizal Tanjung was on hand, and competitors thrived in the small-but-fun typhoon swell. Next up: The Shanghai Super Session.

6. HURLEY'S HEROES Hayden Panettiere, aka Claire Bennet, was recently filmed in a Hurley Wilson shirt during at segment for the 2009 Teen Nick HALO Awards. But what she doesn't tell you in the segment is that the Hurley Wilson to her is like the red cape to Superman or the blanket to Linus. In other words: without it, she would bleed just like the rest of us.

7. THE RELL EFFECT Anyone who knew Rell Sunn knows she inspired the best out of everyone. More than 10 years since her passing, you can still see that effect every single year at the Rell Sunn Menehune Surfing Championships. A solid crew from the Hurley ohana made it over to Makaha this past weekend for the 34th annual event, and plenty of smiles and shakas went all around. 2. 225 AFTER DARK At the risk of repeating ourselves, two major events are happening at 225 this week, one tomorrow night (12/3) and one Friday (12/4). The first will celebrate Kid Robot's launch of the Munny World toys. We will also be unveiling Dalek's new 225 art centerpiece the one he's been painstakingly crafting in Town Hall for a good two weeks. Be sure to witness the explosion of new colors and fruity flavors. Friday we're encouraging you to Customize Christmas. Erik "Rubberneck" Roner and Bob Burnquist will be on hand, and the first five to customize an item will receive a free Nitro Circus DVD. Remember: gifts with a personalized touch are super in this year.

3. IRVINE SPECTRUM AFTER DARK Munny World toys will have an encore performance Friday night (12/4) at our Irvine Spectrum store, so you now have zero excuses to miss both of these events.

4. THE ANTI-CANVAS And in case your only excuse is, "Dude, I'm in da islands," then we have the solution for you. On Friday night, Hurley and Contrast Magazine are partnering on an event called: "The Anti-Canvas: A Showcase of Boardshort Art For Charity." The boardshort art will feature everyone from Alex Grey to Clark Little's magic water photography and all proceeds will go to Save Our Sports, the Junior Lifeguard Program and the Samoa Disaster Relief Fund. It all starts at 5 and goes to the wee hours at the Soho Mixed Media Bar and includes an art show, silent auction and Hurley fashion show. See you dere.

The premiere issue of KING SNOW MAGAZINE recently hit the stands. Sessions felt all warm and fuzzy inside seeing our own son, Kevin Griffin, flipping upside-down.

We were also excited to see Sessions' alumni Martin Gallant feeding hay to his horse.

Mr. Griffin was also featured in the Snowboard Canada fall issue. Here we see Kevin posing for the camera and also sliding a fu#$ing huge rail switchness.

Our French Stallion Phil Jacques also twisted it up in the SBC fall issue.

La flamme olympique de passage à Bromont

Dimanche, le 6 décembre prochain, la flamme olympique « trottera » sur la rue Shefford à Bromont et Mario Deslauriers fera un clin d’œil à l’histoire des sports équestres autour de festivités organisées par la Ville de Bromont.

Quand : Le dimanche 6 décembre à 9 h 23
Où : Le trajet suivra la rue Shefford, de l’intersection John-Savage à l’adresse 1182, et les mesures de sécurité prévoient la piétonisation de cette artère pour l’événement
Comment : Vêtus de blanc et de rouge
Une grande fête s’organise pour le passage de la flamme olympique à Bromont et tous les citoyens sont conviés à participer à ce grand moment historique!
Invitez familles, amis et voisins à se joindre à vous et venez en grand nombre. Vêtissez-vous de blanc et de rouge et soulignons dans un air de fête cet événement mémorable. Car en plus de souligner le passage de la flamme, nous aurons l’honneur d’y voir monsieur Mario Deslauriers défiler sur son cheval et portant dignement le flambeau. Pour vous garder au chaud, café et chocolat chaud seront servis.
Une exposition Bromont 76, installée pour l’occasion au Centre culturel St-John, sera le grand point de rencontre. Elle vous fera revivre ou encore découvrir les moments forts des Jeux olympiques de Montréal en 1976, alors que les compétitions hippiques avaient lieu à notre renommé Parc équestre olympique. Monsieur Deslauriers y signera des autographes entre 9 h 30 et 10 h.
