THE HURLEY TIMES
Wednesday, February 24, 2010
The Hurley Times is having a case of the Wednesdays. Kind of gloomy outside. His back is killing him. And the best story the staff could dig up this week is about a cat named Hurley Boy. The Hurley Times does not like cats. Still, with a deep sigh, it offers the following:
THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
1. CORONA DEL MAR TAKES ROUND ONE
The 2000 Presidential election. American Idol Season 7. And now this: the first round of 2010's Walk the Walk video challenge series - one of the tightest voting battles in recent memory. Corona Del Mar and Huntington Beach High School squared off in an historic extreme networking contest, telling everyone they know (and don't know) to go to hurley.com and vote for their video. When the digits settled, CDM edged out HBHS, 6498 to 6201, proving once again that WTW is a beautiful thing.
2. BRETT WENT
Nothing is more feel-good than a hometown hero story, and Brett Simpson continues to add chapters to his Huntington Beach epic. We're not sure the last time a mayor, 200 well-wishers and an entire high school cheerleading squad showed up to rally for their favorite surfer, but it happened last Friday in Surf City. After a turbulent plane ride, Simpson is now on the Gold Coast, ready for Heat One at the Quik Pro. Make sure to put him in your stable at www.fantasysurfer.com.
3. HEAVY MEDAL
The big news from Canada has nothing to do with quad jumps (or lack thereof), Scotty Lago's promiscuous bronze medal or Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue. Instead, it's coming from West 49, where Alkaline Trio promoted their new Hurley collaboration and played an acoustic set for their most devoted fans north of the border. What did the crowd think of their favorite band's performance? They gave it an "Ay."
4. LIVING SINGLE
The Hurley Times was shocked and saddened to learn that Jake from ABC's "The Bachelor" may not be the noble romantic we think he is. According to a new article in In Touch Weekly, Jake is not only an "aspiring actor" who once played a bit part on "Walker: Texas Ranger," but he's apparently not even looking for love at all! And we thought that finding a soul mate by making out with 40 women on prime time TV was so genuine. Well, at least there's one thing real about Jake: his choice in boardshorts.
5. ACE REPORTER
The 2010 ASP World Tour is upon us. To get the download, check out our very own Ace Buchan's blog on Surfline. It's so insightful and well-written, he has a few Hurley Times staff members worried about their job security. They should be.
6. BURNQUIST GETS BRONZED
We mentioned last week that Bob Burnquist and Curren Caples were Down Under for the Bowlarama at Bondi. The trip went swimmingly, with Burnquist finishing third in the event and both Curren and Bob drawing huge crowds at some SDS store demos. You heard it here first: skateboarding will be an Olympic sport. OK, you've probably heard that before.
7. PHANTOM CONVENTION
Next week at the Disneyland Hotel, Hurley will be conducting another "Microphone For Youth" experiment. The event: The Student Televison Network National Convention, where 1700 high school students from around the country will gather and partake in a series of video/film/broadcast journalism challenges. We're sponsoring one of those challenges and are calling it the "Hurley Phantom Commercial Contest." Eighty teams of high school students will be putting their spin on our product, trying to sell the world (and judges) on their Phantom Boardshort commercial. Should be a fun kickoff to the Season of the Phantom. Best one gets aired at the US Open of Surfing.
8. HELLO, HURLEY
And finally, a cat from the Big Island named Hurley Boy for obvious reasons. According to the owner, "the marks are real even though everyone thinks I painted them on." Isn't he cute?
You know what? After writing this, The Hurley Times staff actually feels a lot better now. Which means we've just discovered another use for our weekly publication. It's not only fun, informative and occasionally corny, it's therapeutic.
No Bad Days,
The Hurley Times Staff
THE HURLEY TIMES
Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Fog delays, rain, the atmospheric enigma known as El Nino...regardless of the obstacles, the big shows always must go on. Same with The Hurley Times. No amount of multi-tasks, meeting requests, last-minute press releases or pop-up war rooms will stop us from getting this critical info to you. Consider this our weekly medal count:
THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
1. BRETT'S GOING ALREADY
Mayor? Check. Movie? Check. Cheerleaders? Confirmed with pom-poms. Things are ramping up for the Go Brett ASP World Tour Send-off Party this Friday at HSS from 5-7 p.m. If you want to see team and city spirit at its finest, come join us with cowbells on.
2. CAUTION: WET PAINT
You may have noticed that Town Hall was recently taken over by paint cans, ladders, a mountain of empty fast-food cartons and a single boom box. That's because our resident artist Dalek was busy putting his signature on a 14-panel set for an upcoming photo shoot. This set does something really special in the dark, but we'll reveal that once the lights go out.
3. YAY, CREWS
Aussie Junior Mitch Crews is on a tear of late. He's been winning -- or almost winning -- everything in sight, and is now sitting atop the Aussie Pro Junior ratings. His latest triumph was this past weekend at the Oakley Pro Junior at North Stradbroke, taking out nemesis Davey Cathels in the final. It's always fun to beat your nemesis.
4. THE ROYAL TREATMENT
El Drifter was an even bigger hit than we thought in Panama. The Hurley Times just received this image of our favorite hair-farming icon, hanging with Panamanian commander-in-chief Ricardo Martinelli (in the white shirt). "Dude, how sick is that end section at [censored]?" he asked Rob through a translator. Rob is now off to Brazil, where he will be samba-ing in between Drifter screenings during Carnival.
5. ANOTHER BOWL GAME
Bob Burnquist and Curren Caples are like the Machado and Conner Coffin of surfing, and they're in Oz together for the Bondi Bowlarama -- a skate event that attracts tons of legends and rising stars. We have both of those categories covered in Bob and Curren, and it makes us smile on the inside.
6. SWIM ISSUES
There are a few problems with Surfing Magazine's new Swimsuit Issue. Bad lighting. Unflattering angles. Sloppy airbrushing and Dave Rastovich's hairy cheeks. Fortunately, the one editorial spread that features our Little Black Bikini does manage to avoid those issues. Check it out on newsstands this month.
7. FREE PR
...lost Enterprises is such a generous company. In the past six months, they've donated a good chunk of their marketing resources to helping OUR Phantom Boardshort campaign. Since their "Jockstrap Phantom Man" and "$600 Boardshort" ads launched, we've seen a huge spike in sales. Who says every surf company is out for itself? Next time you see Randall or Chicken Willie or the guy they call Muck, be sure to thank them.
8. HIGH ON LOW BROW
Hurley embraces the creative mind and always makes sure it recognizes the originals. Juxtapozfounder and "Godfather of Lowbrow Art" Robert Williams is one of those originals, and we'll be supporting his art show this Saturday at Cal State Northridge. The event is from 6-10 p.m. Tell a friend.
9. YADES IN BARBADOS
This just in from the front lines of high-voltage shreddery: Yadin Nicol just returned from one of the "best trips he's had in years." The destination: Barbados. The waves: big and hollow. Here is an unauthorized peek at what you'll see in the magazines a few months from now.
Phones buzzing. Dudes yelling. But The Hurley Times keeps charging, just like Bode Miller.
Keep those tips up,
The Hurley Times Staff

RESERVE WINDOW DESIGN BY JOHN DOWNER

JASON JESSEE 4 OBEY
If you haven't seen by now, this season we've released a collaboration with legendary skateboarder Jason Jessee. Click HERE to take you to the product or click the photo below. Below is a little information on how the project came about.
Long time friend and man of iconic style, Jason Jesse invited us in to his realm to work together on a collection that we are proud to introduce for Spring 2010. The common thread that ties Jason and OBEY together is the underlying drive to do it yourself. Seeing Jason's surroundings opened up an understanding of his ability to take everything from found objects to blank pieces of paper and somehow make them intriguing and unique. Jason pulls from a wealth of knowledge from times past where you hand made objects. Seeing hand tooled leather, metal sculptures and giant wood slabs sitting right along side skateboards, bikes and guns offers a look in to how Jason weaves the past and present together. The OBEY 4 Jason Jessee collection is a hand picked assortment based on some key pieces that have become synonymous with his style as well as an illustration by Shepard and some moments in time captured while visiting him in Watsonville.
To commemorate the release, on Tuesday Feb 9th posters will go on sale on shop.obeyclothing.com and www.obeygiant.com . They are an edition of 200 and are signed by Shepard and Jason Jessee. Limit to 1 per household.

Sometime Ritual
Our homie Randy Laybourne comes through at NLA for a little instal action. 'Sometime Ritual is the home for a majority of my daily desktops. Each day of work, I create a new digital image for my screen. It's a great way to get the brain firing for the day. Since 2001 I've been adding to my collection of images with a mix of my own drawings, photos and found images from old Popular Science mags, comics and random things I see sitting around.' Thanks Randy!

POSTED BY SUSAN AT 12:13 PMNew Emerica Pro: Justin Regan!
While ex-Emerica brand manager Justin Regan knew he was heading out for a romantic dinner with his wife, little did he know a secret surprise party was brewing courtesy of Emerica, Club Mumble and The Skateboard Mag.
All Emerican Royalty had gathered at downtown LA's Wurstküche to celebrate the Emerica-turned-Altamont brand manager's 36th birthday. In addition, and unbeknownst to many, he'd be presented with his first Emerica pro-model shoe, designed in secret and months in the making. Eriberto Oriol for Altamont
A top art critic from The Los Angeles Times called Eriberto Oriol "a people's aesthete for his discerning eye." Eriberto's photos have a strong sense of perspective and composition. This formal sensibility merged with a gift for capturing the raw essence and realities of L.A. Latino street life was instilled in Eriberto's son, Estevan Oriol, at an early age. Estevan is now a renowned photographer and director in his own right. But, it was Eriberto who planted the seed, literally! The Eriberto Oriol for Altamont collection is in stores now!
Watch more on his collection HERE and HERE.Labels: altamontPOSTED BY SUSAN AT 10:57 AM
