Matts Kulisek and Megan Ginter Win First Ever RIDE Shakedown U.S.A.

Seattle (March 13, 2010) - On Day 2 of the RIDE Shakedown U.S.A., Old Man Winter made his presence known once again, sending even more snow to the already generously snowy Summit at Snoqualmie, located 45 minutes from Seattle. Even with the amassing of flakes, neither the crowds nor the competitors were deterred, and the semi-finals got underway in this inaugural year of the premier international snowboarding event and competition.
A total of 17 men and 5 women embraced the weather and had blizzardy good times 'boarding in the semi-final of the RIDE Shakedown. The weather made visibility more challenging for riders, as well as slowing the pace of the competition somewhat - even delaying the final big event. In the end though, nothing could stop RIDE Shakedown U.S.A.'s action from continuing!
First place in the RIDE Shakedown U.S.A. was scooped up by Ville Mont-Royal's (Quebec, Canada) Matts Kulisek. The 24 year-old wins $12,000 for his Fronside 9 tailgrab on the jump and his halfcab 180 50/50 on the down rail. Kulisek is no stranger to the RIDE Shakedown - in Canada in 2008 he won the amateur event and in 2009 finished in second place in the pro category. Kulisek was definitely stoked about his big win, "This is so amazing! This $12,000 is going to solve a lot of problems. I've been hurting around my ribs so I didn't really expect too much tonight. Everything seemed to go down really well here at Summit. There was a little problem with the weather but they sorted it out and I can only imagine this event is going to be even better next year." Manuel Diaz (Santiago, Chile) took second place and earned himself a $3,000 paycheck. The 27 year-old winner of yesterday's amateur competition once again impressed judges, this time with a backside 7 mute on the jump, and a frontside 360 nose bunk on the totem pole. Cruising into third place was E-Man Anderson from Whistler, B.C. Canada; at his very first RIDE Shakedown, the 24 year-old wins $2,000 thanks to a run with a switch backside 7 mute on the jump, and a switch frontside 5-0 on the down rail.
In the women's competition, first place went to Carnation, WA's Megan Ginter. A backside 360 on the jump and bunk transfer on the totem pole made this 23 year-old's first-ever RIDE Shakedown U.S.A. a memorable one - she also scores herself $5,000. "I'm really stoked that there is a RIDE Shakedown in the United States now - and especially at one of my home resorts here at Summit at Snoqualmie. I'm excited to see how many people came out because it's definitely going to get bigger and better every year," enthused Ginter. She also promised that you haven't seen the end of her yet, "You'll also definitely see me up at Saint Sauveur in Quebec. That will be my first time at the Canadian Shakedown so I'm super excited to see how that goes!" Hana Beaman of Salt Lake City, Utah once again graced the podium at RIDE Shakedown Canada. Last year the 27 year-old won the Canadian competition; this year she scored second place and $3,000 in prize money. In third place was Boulder Colorado's Megan Whiteside; at 22 years old, she too is already a RIDE Shakedown veteran - she took second place in the Canadian event last year, this year third gets her a spot on the podium and $2,000 in cash.

The accumulation of 14 inches of new powder at the Summit at Snoqualmie in the last 48 hours forced the cancellation of RIDE Shakedown's Halftime show. The Halftime show unleashes skateboarders on the ramps to show snowboarders how it's done in the summertime, but the wintery conditions rendered the undertaking far too dangerous this time around.
Marching in to save the day was Seattle's own world-renown Blue Thunder Marching Band, heralding the debut of the finals, and leading the way to the event course. Their brilliant musicianship enthused the crowd and competitors alike, giving the RIDE Shakedown some local color and great energy heading into a thrilling and competitive final featuring international, world-class snowboarding talent.
Brendan O'Dowd, president of DIZZLE Entertainment and co-organizer of the RIDE Shakedown was pleased with the first-ever U.S. edition of the RIDE Shakedown. "More than 3000 people were at RIDE Shakedown (Friday and Saturday), so that's a great start! We're absolutely coming back to the Summit at Snoqualmie next year!"
In 2011, RIDE Shakedown will already be celebrating its 10th anniversary - but 2010's fun isn't even over yet. Tune in April 2-3 for more RIDE Shakedown action when the competition heads to Quebec, Canada's Mont Saint Saveur. Canadian maple may be sweet, but the skills you'll see there will be even sweeter still - without the cavities. See you there!

Inaugural RIDE Shakedown U.S.A. Dazzles Crowds and Competitors Alike

Seattle, March 12, 2010 - After a healthy dose of fresh powder at the Snoqualmie Pass last night, the inaugural RIDE Shakedown U.S.A. got underway today at the Summit at Snoqualmie, just 45 minutes from Seattle. Spectators and boarders alike were ready for a premier international snowboarding competition - and that's exactly what they got! On the menu today were amateur men duking it out for a place among the pro's for Saturday's big event, and the race to be the Rail Jam king and queen.
A total of 24 snowboarders from around the globe took part in the unique competition, where amateurs earn the chance to 'board against the pros in tomorrow's semi-final main event - the RIDE Shakedown. In the end, only three riders will have that privilege, and today it was Santiago, Chile's Manuel Diaz who won top honours, followed by Tanner Davidson (Calgary, Canada), and Colin Clarke (Truckee, U.S.A.).
Diaz, 27 years old, impressed the judges with his smooth, stylish run, featuring a back side 7 Japan on the jump, and a Frontside 3 nose bonk on the totem pole (rail) - earning him top spot. Almost ten years Diaz's junior, Alberta Canada's Tanner Davidson performed a back side 7 on the jump, 50/50 Frontside 360 out on the down rail for second place. California's Colin Clarke grabbed the last available spot, with a cab 1080 tail grab on the jump and 50/50 on the close out rail - scoring him the last spot to glide beside the pros.
Local 'Boarder Gets Rail Jam King Crown
The Rail Jam competition this year was packed with skilled 'boarders; in the initial qualification rounds, 3 guys and 1 gal (amateurs) qualified for the pro rail jam. For the men, it was Stefan Krumm 18 years old (Woodinville, WA), Erik Van Assche 25 years old (Denver, CO) Robbie Walsh, aged 27, (Welches, OR) and the lone gal was Raelynd Tarnove, 20 (Maple Valley, WA).

Yet there can only be one Rail Jam king and queen; this year it was local rider Austin Hironaka of University Place, WA who took the win with an original combination of a 360 Miller flip tailgrab transfer on the totem pole. The 23 year old's ride was stylish and had a lot of air, all while being technically superb. When asked about his big win today, Hironaka said "Today was amazing! It was just a big jam with a bunch of friends. Nothing but big smiles and good boarding and I had a really good time. I'm on cloud nine right now and I just haven't gotten off," he commented. "I'm stoked that RIDE Shakedown came to the U.S.A. dude! I'm $5000 richer! I couldn't be any more stoked!" he enthused.
Isabelle Lalive, age 26 of Breckenridge, Colorado won the women's competition with an impressive Frontside 50/50 frontside 180 out on the down rail. Judges were impressed with her ride - for her efforts she get the women's purse of $3,000.

Emerica Welcomes Colin Provost

Words from Emerica Team Manager, Jeff Henderson: As a team manager, you have to keep a constant look out for up and coming skaters who will possibly one day be a member of the team. A while back Remy Stratton from Volcom told me that Collin Provost, a young buck at the time, wanted to ride for Emerica. I started flowing him shoes and took him on some trips. He was really young but you could tell he was a such natural. Over the years we saw Collin grow and become very powerful on a skateboard. An all terrain ripper, he has the skills to make everything look really easy. The Emerica team took notice of Collin stepping it up over the past couple of years. After sticking it out on flow and putting in some hard work he has earned himself a spot on the Emerica team. Congratulations Collin and Welcome aboard! The Hurley Times is having a case of the Wednesdays. Kind of gloomy outside. His back is killing him. And the best story the staff could dig up this week is about a cat named Hurley Boy. The Hurley Times does not like cats. Still, with a deep sigh, it offers the following:
THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES

1. CORONA DEL MAR TAKES ROUND ONE
The 2000 Presidential election. American Idol Season 7. And now this: the first round of 2010's Walk the Walk video challenge series - one of the tightest voting battles in recent memory. Corona Del Mar and Huntington Beach High School squared off in an historic extreme networking contest, telling everyone they know (and don't know) to go to hurley.com and vote for their video. When the digits settled, CDM edged out HBHS, 6498 to 6201, proving once again that WTW is a beautiful thing.

2. BRETT WENT
Nothing is more feel-good than a hometown hero story, and Brett Simpson continues to add chapters to his Huntington Beach epic. We're not sure the last time a mayor, 200 well-wishers and an entire high school cheerleading squad showed up to rally for their favorite surfer, but it happened last Friday in Surf City. After a turbulent plane ride, Simpson is now on the Gold Coast, ready for Heat One at the Quik Pro. Make sure to put him in your stable at www.fantasysurfer.com.

3. HEAVY MEDAL
The big news from Canada has nothing to do with quad jumps (or lack thereof), Scotty Lago's promiscuous bronze medal or Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue. Instead, it's coming from West 49, where Alkaline Trio promoted their new Hurley collaboration and played an acoustic set for their most       devoted fans north of the border. What did the crowd think of their favorite band's performance? They gave it an "Ay."

4. LIVING SINGLE
The Hurley Times was shocked and saddened to learn that Jake from ABC's "The Bachelor" may not be the noble romantic we think he is. According to a new article in In Touch Weekly, Jake is not only an "aspiring actor" who once played a bit part on "Walker: Texas Ranger," but he's apparently not even looking for love at all! And we thought that finding a soul mate by making out with 40 women on prime time TV was so genuine. Well, at least there's one thing real about Jake: his choice in boardshorts.

5. ACE REPORTER
The 2010 ASP World Tour is upon us. To get the download, check out our very own Ace Buchan's blog on Surfline. It's so insightful and well-written, he has a few Hurley Times staff members worried about their job security. They should be.

6. BURNQUIST GETS BRONZED
We mentioned last week that Bob Burnquist and Curren Caples were Down Under for the Bowlarama       at Bondi. The trip went swimmingly, with Burnquist finishing third in the event and both Curren and Bob drawing huge crowds at some SDS store demos. You heard it here first: skateboarding will be an Olympic sport. OK, you've probably heard that before.

7. PHANTOM CONVENTION
Next week at the Disneyland Hotel, Hurley will be conducting another "Microphone For Youth" experiment. The event: The Student Televison Network National Convention, where 1700 high school students from around the country will gather and partake in a series of video/film/broadcast journalism       challenges. We're sponsoring one of those challenges and are calling it the "Hurley Phantom Commercial Contest." Eighty teams of high school students will be putting their spin on our product, trying to sell the world (and judges) on their Phantom Boardshort commercial. Should be a fun kickoff to the Season of the Phantom. Best one gets aired at the US Open of Surfing.

8. HELLO, HURLEY
And finally, a cat from the Big Island named Hurley Boy for obvious reasons. According to the owner, "the marks are real even though everyone thinks I painted them on." Isn't he cute?
You know what? After writing this, The Hurley Times staff actually feels a lot better now. Which means we've just discovered another use for our weekly publication. It's not only fun, informative and occasionally corny, it's therapeutic.

In third place was Boulder Colorado's Megan Whiteside; at 22 years old, she too is already a RIDE Shakedown veteran - she took second place in the Canadian event last year, this year third gets her a spot on the podium and $2,000 in cash.
Blue Thunder Marching Band - Old Man Winter's Favourite! The accumulation of 14 inches of new powder at the Summit at Snoqualmie in the last 48 hours forced the cancellation of RIDE Shakedown's Halftime show. The Halftime show unleashes skateboarders on the ramps to show snowboarders how it's done in the summertime, but the wintery conditions rendered the undertaking far too dangerous this time around. Marching in to save the day was Seattle's own world-renown Blue Thunder Marching Band, heralding the debut of the finals, and leading the way to the event course. Their brilliant musicianship enthused the crowd and competitors alike, giving the RIDE Shakedown some local color and great energy heading into a thrilling and competitive final featuring international, world-class snowboarding talent. Brendan O'Dowd, president of DIZZLE Entertainment and co-organizer of the RIDE Shakedown was pleased with the first-ever U.S. edition of the RIDE Shakedown. "More than 3000 people were at RIDE Shakedown (Friday and Saturday), so that's a great start! We're absolutely coming back to the Summit at Snoqualmie next year!" In 2011, RIDE Shakedown will already be celebrating its 10th anniversary - but 2010's fun isn't even over yet. FRIDAY MARCH 12th RECAP Local Austin Hironaka & Isabelle Lalive Win Big at RIDE Shakedown Rail Jam Inaugural RIDE Shakedown U.S.A. Dazzles Crowds and Competitors Alike Seattle, March 12, 2010 - After a healthy dose of fresh powder at the Snoqualmie Pass last night, the inaugural RIDE Shakedown U.S.A. got underway today at the Summit at Snoqualmie, just 45 minutes from Seattle. Spectators and boarders alike were ready for a premier international snowboarding competition - and that's exactly what they got! On the menu today were amateur men duking it out for a place among the pro's for Saturday's big event, and the race to be the Rail Jam king and queen. A total of 24 snowboarders from around the globe took part in the unique competition, where amateurs earn the chance to 'board against the pros in tomorrow's semi-final main event - the RIDE Shakedown. In the end, only three riders will have that privilege, and today it was Santiago, Chile's Manuel Diaz who won top honours, followed by Tanner Davidson (Calgary, Canada), and Colin Clarke (Truckee, U.S.A.). Diaz, 27 years old, impressed the judges with his smooth, stylish run, featuring a back side 7 Japan on the jump, and a Frontside 3 nose bonk on the totem pole (rail) - earning him top spot. Almost ten years Diaz's junior, Alberta Canada's Tanner Davidson performed a back side 7 on the jump, 50/50 Frontside 360 out on the down rail for second place. California's Colin Clarke grabbed the last available spot, with a cab 1080 tail grab on the jump and 50/50 on the close out rail - scoring him the last spot to glide beside the pros. Local 'Boarder Gets Rail Jam King Crown The Rail Jam competition this year was packed with skilled 'boarders; in the initial qualification rounds, 3 guys and 1 gal (amateurs) qualified for the pro rail jam. For the men, it was Stefan Krumm 18 years old (Woodinville, WA), Erik Van Assche 25 years old (Denver, CO) Robbie Walsh, aged 27, (Welches, OR) and the lone gal was Raelynd Tarnove, 20 (Maple Valley, WA). Yet there can only be one Rail Jam king and queen; this year it was local rider Austin Hironaka of University Place, WA who took the win with an original combination of a 360 Miller flip tailgrab transfer on the totem pole. The 23 year old's ride was stylish and had a lot of air, all while being technically superb. When asked about his big win today, Hironaka said "Today was amazing! It was just a big jam with a bunch of friends. Nothing but big smiles and good boarding and I had a really good time. I'm on cloud nine right now and I just haven't gotten off," he commented. "I'm stoked that RIDE Shakedown came to the U.S.A. dude! I'm $5000 richer! I couldn't be any more stoked!" he enthused. Isabelle Lalive, age 26 of Breckenridge, Colorado won the women's competition with an impressive Frontside 50/50 frontside 180 out on the down rail.
